Traditional tennis coaching lacks data-driven insights that can help prevent injury and improve technique. Without the right guidance, players may not be aware of their weaknesses or be at risk of injury. The lack of data analytics in tennis is hindering players and coaches from gaining valuable insights into their performance, developing effective game strategies, and making informed decisions.

The problem

The solution

Create a product with game statistics that bring real value to the game, technique analysis that will help coaches to see what the human eye can’t catch, and injury alerts and training tips that will constitute an essential part of injury prevention.

Before diving into the app's development, I embarked on a thorough exploration of user needs. I conducted on-line survey and user interviews, analyzed competitor apps, and gathered feedback to gain insights into the pain points and desires of tennis enthusiasts. This research formed the foundation of my design process, allowing me to prioritize features and make informed decisions about the app's functionality.

Instead of creating a user persona, I took the "jobs to be done" approach. That means, I defined what are the jobs, that my users would like to "hire" my product to do. My survey and user interviews showed me, that tennis coaches would like to have a tool that would replace their notebooks, would see better than their eyes, and store videos in one place, so they don't have to look for hours for the one they want at the moment. Tennis players on the other hand would like to have a source of motivation before the match and those without a coach, playing occasionally for fun, would like "someone" to tell them if what their doing is correct and safe. So my team and I decided to create a product that would be a great tool for tennis coaches and a replacement for a coach for ones that don't have one.

Define

We had to rely heavily on meticulous planning and clear communication to structure the app's information architecture. I collaborated closely with the development team to map out the app's flow, ensuring a logical and intuitive navigation experience for users. I employed design thinking techniques, such as sketching and whiteboarding, to visualize and iterate on the app's structure, ensuring a seamless user journey.

User flows for TenSlam

Ideate

With wireframing skipped, I shifted my focus directly to visual design. Leveraging the insights gained from user research, I selected a clean and modern aesthetic that reflected the energy and elegance of the sport. I incorporated the branding colors, fonts, and animations that I had previously established during the landing page redesign. By consistently applying these design elements throughout the app, I created a cohesive and recognizable brand identity. I created the screens for 3 types of devices and prototyped in Figma and ProtoPie in orther to present the feature VC how the complete product would work.

Prototype

Before the start of developing first features I conducted user testing sessions, gathered feedback and insights to inform further improvements. This allowed us to identify and address any usability issues and refine the app's overall experience. I tested 5 users and the subject of the test was the general user behaviour in the app. This means I tested the registration/login process, placement of the infomation and features in the app.
